Greenbelt’s Economic Development initiatives are focused on fostering a vibrant, local business community. This is done, in part, by promoting Greenbelt’s quality of life, amenities, and proximity to DC and Baltimore. By serving as a liaison to entrepreneurs and businesses, Greenbelt’s Economic Development department offers technical assistance to support sustainable business growth and development. The Economic Development department also provides the necessary linkages to partnering organizations, city, county, state and federal resources.
City Council allotted a sum of $1,900,000 to be spent on projects managed and lead by Economic Development. The goal of these projects is to support businesses, non-profits, and residents affected by COVID-19. By providing these support programs and grants, the City hopes to alleviate many of the pain points experienced by local businesses. Whether it’s grants for small businesses to aid in business operating expenses and improvements, support programs for residents seeking to become entrepreneurs, workforce development to provide residents with needed skills for career changes, or marketing campaigns to promote shopping local City Council and City Staff are looking to make a meaning impact in our local economy with short term relief and long term strategies.
Four projects have been selected by City Council to help facilitate our local economic development efforts. While a large sum has been put aside to directly help small businesses, other monies have been set aside for the enrichment of residents seeking to expand skills for their job or seeking development of new skills in their move into new career. Our local small businesses were hit hard by the pandemic. While early efforts have focused on residents and infrastructure, the Small Business Grant seeks to understand all the impacts of COVID-19 on our local economy and businesses and seeks to alleviate the extra burden business owners have endured. Our Economic Development Manager, Kevin Simpson, seeks input from local businesses in meeting the needs of new and established businesses alike. To learn more about applying for grants, click here.
