Project Description
This project focuses on providing residents with workforce development skills from taking classes to cost of supplies. This is an employee based system. Monies for employers has been provided under Small Business Assistance.
Project Updates
Seventeen (17) residents have been granted scholarships up to $10,000. Total funds granted $ 148,933.
Application Information

The City of Greenbelt recognizes the importance of workforce education to our community and supports Greenbelt residents interested in pursuing a new career or enhancing their current career path. The purpose of the Workforce Development Scholarship Program is to help Greenbelt residents and those enrolled in the Greenbelt GED, ESOL or Workforce Development Program cover the cost of workforce training, including higher education and continuing education opportunities. The Greenbelt Workforce Development Scholarship Program will award $10,000 to eligible residents.

Applicants must:

  1. Be 21 years of age or older
  2. Currently reside within the City limits for at least 6 months or longer since March of 2020

OR

  1. Be enrolled in the Greenbelt GED, ESOL or Workforce Development Program for 6 months or longer

The application period opens May 1, 2023 and will continue until all scholarship funds are expended or May 30, 2024.

Applications reviewed upon submission; subject to funding availability.

WHO CAN APPLY

The scholarship is for Greenbelt residents and those enrolled in the Greenbelt GED, ESOL or Workforce Development Program who are 21 years of age or older and are looking to enroll, have enrolled in or have been accepted into a college, university, vocational training program, or workforce development program. Residents must currently reside within the City limits of Greenbelt and have resided for at least 6 months or longer since March of 2020 or be enrolled in the Greenbelt GED, ESOL or Workforce Development Program for 6 months or longer.    

By the time the scholarship is awarded, the applicant must be admitted or accepted to a college, university, vocational training program, or workforce development program.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be a City of Greenbelt resident.
  • Applicant is  21 years of age or older
  • Applicant is planning to pursue a workforce development educational program and has proof of enrollment and/or acceptance to a workforce development educational program.
  • Needs to have an email address to apply. If you do not have an email address, you will need to create one before applying.
  • If the applicant is a student enrolled in a two-year or four-year college /university or vocational training program, the applicant must provide an official educational institution transcript to validate current enrollment.
  • Must meet income eligibility requirements.

FINANCIAL AWARDS CAN BE APPLIED TOWARDS 2023/2024

  • Tuition Cost or an allowable expense under the program or institution’s guidelines such as:
  • Lab, or Class Fees
  • Other Costs Directly Related to Education/Training

APPLICANTS ARE REQUIRED TO SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS WITH THEIR APPLICATION

  • Signed Application Form.
  • Acceptance letter or notification of enrollment for education or workforce development program.
  • Income eligibility: A copy of resident’s 2022 tax return or a copy of a 2022 W2 or two most recent pay stubs (self/parents/guardians pay stubs).
  • Proof of residency, can include a copy of most recent utility bill, telephone bill, or signed lease.
  • Copy of applicant’s ID (MD Driver’s License, MD Government ID, Current   Passport, Visa, Employment ID)
  • Essay (maximum 500 words). Please choose ONE of the below essay topics:
  • How do you think this scholarship will help you towards accomplishing your career goals?
  • If you receive the scholarship, how will you use your education/training to help others achieve their career goals?
  • What are your academic/professional goals and how do you plan to achieve them?

Greater of 100% Income AMI or 100% U.S. Median Income
